Huperzia Serrata is a rare herb found in the plant families of Huperziaceae. It is also classified as firmoss or Chinese Club Moss and is native to India and Southeast Asia. (Hupperzia Serrata, 2017). In China, this plant has been as a part of traditional medicine for centuries. Huperzia Serrata is also known as acetylcholinesterase inhibitor for increasing the levels of a neurotransmitter related to memory formation and most basic cognitive functions. (Huperzia Serrata, 2017).
The Biologically active ingredient extracted from this plant is called huperzine A, which is valued throughout the nootropic industry for its memory-boosting benefits, protection of brain and slowing down the progress of Alzheimer's disease. (Hupperzia Serrata, 2017). Huperzia Serrata is believed to be efficient in preventing acetylcholinesterase (AchE). AchE is an enzyme accountable for degrading the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. (Huperzia Serrata, 2017). In other words, Huperzia Serrata boosts memory by preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine, which is an important memory-boosting compound. Studies show that acetylcholine levels decrease as we age, that is why people suffer from memory loss and cognitive ability is reduced. By preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine, Huperzia Serrata can improve the brain's ability to recall memories.
At the same time, medical research and testing have acknowledged Huperzine A as a useful ingredient in the treatment of diseases related to neurodegeneration, such as myasthenia gravis and Alzheimer's disease. A recent study proved the efficacy of huperzine A by improving the condition of patients with reduced neurological abilities up to 70 percent. (Huperzia Serrata, 2017).
Other studies have produced results, which show that Huperzia Serrata may have beneficial outcomes when used for patients suffering from Parkinson's disease. Historically, Huperzia Serrata has been used for a number of conditions such as fever, inflammation, blood circulation, to relax muscles, and the treatment for cold, bruises, strains and swelling. (Huperzine A, 2009). Additionally, there is significant evidence that using Huperzine A may also enhance learning capacity and increase concentration and focus. (Huperzia Serrata, 2017).
Huperzia Serrata is widely distributed as both an herbal Alzheimer’s treatment and as a cognitive augmentation supplement.
