Bacopa Monnieri - Its effects on improving human cognition and reducing the strain of human brain
Bacopa Monnieri, normally called water hyssop, is a herb, which is used often in Ayurveda for its medicinal properties. Its supplement has proven to be one, which helps, in improving human cognition by minimizing and reducing the strain of human brain and anxiety. Not only Bacopa Monnieri enacts these effects in elder people but it also leaves it effects in younger people, which makes it a beneficial nootropic. It achieves its effective mental function by interacting with serotonergic systems and dopamine. Especially, it promotes the neuron communication within human brain (Bacopa Monnieri, 2017). It increases the growth of nerve endings commonly called dendrites and enhances the function of the human nervous system. In addition, Bacopa Monnieri is also famous as an antioxidant.
Bacopa Monnieri is also employed for Alzheimer’s disease as it improves human memory, reduces anxiety, treats attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, resists allergic conditions, cures irritable bowel syndrome, and act as a general tonic for fighting mental and physical stress. Animal research published by the University of Michigan Health System reveals the positive brain effects of bacopa, including a decrease in both depression and anxiety (Axe, 2017). Alzheimer’s disease is a brain sickness that gradually causes memory loss, dementia, and early death. Natural Alzheimer’s treatment can contain supplementation with bacopa Monnieri. According to the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation, it might prevent dementia related to Alzheimer’s (Axe, 2017). These very positive effects on the nervous system have biochemically been accredited to an augmentation of the effects of the neurotransmitters acetylcholine and, possibly, serotonin or GABA (Axe, 2017). In addition, it is used for the treatment of mental illnesses, joint pain, epilepsy, hoarseness, backache, sexual performance problems in both male and female sexes.
Chronic pain is a massive health problem. Unfortunately, 77 percent of people having chronic pain also suffer some grade of medically remediable depression. Bacopa is an herbal therapy for pain tolerance (Axe, 2017). A study published in Current Medicinal Chemistry revealed that Bacopa Monnieri not only has robust antidepressant results, but it has pain-reducing abilities analogous to morphine (Axe, 2017). The study also showed that this herbal Ayurvedic treatment affords protective benefits for organs usually affected by opiate toxicity like the kidneys, brain, and heart.
